Sweethearts candy, the conversation hearts bearing messages like "Be Mine," "Hot Stuff" and "Hug Me," will not be on store shelves this year because the company that makes them went out of business.
The New England Confectionary Company, or Necco, closed up shop last year after more than 100 years in business. It was auctioned off to an investment firm that went on to sell it to Spangler Candy Company in September. But that company didn't have enough time to produce the candy hearts in time for Valentine's Day, so lovers will have to wait until Valentine's Day 2020 to express their feelings with chalky candy.
