Anthony Guglielmi, a Chicago police spokesman, tweeted there was “no evidence to support” the report from ABC7 Eyewitness News. The outlet said that police are "investigating whether Smollett and the two men staged the attack allegedly because Smollett was being written off ofEmpire."
A spokesperson for 20th Century Fox, which produces the hit FOX show, denies the actor is leavingEmpire, saying, “The idea that Jussie Smollett has been, or would be, written off ofEmpire is patently ridiculous. He remains a core player on this very successful series and we continue to stand behind him.”
Another outlet,CBS Chicago, also reported that investigators believe Jussie and the two men of interest “potentially staged the attack."
Meanwhile, Chicago TV reporterCharlie De Martweeted that the two men of interest in the case are Nigerian and were extras onEmpire. De Mar claims police raided the duo's home and found five bottles of bleach, a red hat, two laptops and other items. Jussie claims his attackers doused him with bleach.
De Mar also says the two men left for Nigeria the day of the alleged attack, but police were waiting for them when they returned to Chicago Wednesday night.
