Mariah Carey Battling Over 'Queen of Christmas' Title

Mariah Carey has been known as the "Queen of Christmas" since the success of her 1994 single, All I Want For Christmas is You. She is now working to trademark her royal title, but may end up in court behind it. Since it became public in July of 2022, two singers have come forward disputing that she owns that title.

First up is Darlene Love who took to Facebook to claim the title saying David Letterman gave her that nickname one year before MC's single was released. She says, "Is it true that Mariah Carey trade marked “Queen of Christmas”? 🤣 What does that mean that I can’t use that title? 🤔 David Letterman officially declared me the Queen of Christmas 29 years ago, a year before she released ”All I want For Christmas Is You” and at 81 years of age I’m NOT changing anything. I’ve been in the business for 52 years, have earned it and can still hit those notes! 🙏🏾 If Mariah has a problem call David or my lawyer!! 👎🏾👑🎄🎶❤️".

In addition to Darlene, Elizabeth Chan is also disagreeing with MC claiming that title saying “Christmas has come way before any of us on earth, and hopefully will be around way after any of us on earth. And I feel very strongly that no one person should hold onto anything around Christmas or monopolize it in the way that Mariah seeks to in perpetuity. That’s just not the right thing to do. Christmas is for everyone. It’s meant to be shared; it’s not meant to be owned.“ Chan has also filed a formal declaration of opposition via her lawyer to MC's 2021 trademark application.

In December 2021 All I Want For Christmas is You became Diamond Certified and is considered the unofficial start to the Christmas season.
