As a San Francisco native, I had no idea our sewer system was this large! A man in SF has gone viral after he exposed the "large community of people living in the sewers of San Francisco." Apparently, firefighters were on scene because someone allegedly started a fire in the sewers. As he expressed concern for the people living underground, many local residents were shocked to learn the news.
Residents followed up in the comments with more details about San Francisco's sewer system. One pointing out that much like NY & LA, SF's sewer system was from the Gold Rush days and expansive. People have apparently been living down there for years!
The sewer in San Francisco is also the storm drain system, they all converge into the sewer facility. For years there have been people living in the tunnels. Pray for life and for those below.
Correct. And unlike New York or LA or Boston sewers, San Francisco sewers were constructed and paid for by gold rush. Not only is storm water and wasted water running through the same system, the sewers themselves are large and expansive. Like Ninja Turtles on Fentanyl.
Some years back, Mike Rowe did an episode of Dirty Jobs on San Francisco's sewers! Imagine living in this!!!! Check out the episode below.
